Spoon Sofa Materials

Materials

Crystal is made from a special mixture of quartz sand, calcinated soda, red lead, ash and calcite or limestone. Our cut crystal glassware has a 24% lead content making it easier to sculpt because the working temperature of the glass is lowered, extending the amount of time the glassblower has to shape the molten glass bulb. Lead is also responsible for the clarity of crystal – the higher the lead content, the greater the brilliance and the more it sparkles in sunlight.

Spoon Sofa Method

Method

The glass mixture is melted in furnaces at 1,450°C. The glassmaker takes a small quantity of molten glass on the end of a glass pipe, then blows a bulb into the desired shape. After the crystal is shaped and slowly cooled (to prevent cracking), the glasscutter cuts the piece by hand using traditional carborundum or diamond cutting wheels of varying levels of fineness. Finally they polish the piece by hand until it feels perfectly smooth and sparkles in the light.
