Ercol Originals Stacking Chair

You will find vintage Ercol furniture throughout our Houses and the Ercol Originals range includes many of these Mid Century pieces, made in the same way as when they were first designed. Designed by Lucian Ercolani in 1957, the famous stacking chair is light, durable and can be stacked vertically to save space. Method

These days steam bending is largely an artisan technique – Ercol is one of a very few companies ones doing it on a larger scale. Pieces of wood are steamed in a kiln that works just like a kettle, then bent into shape in one of three methods, by hand using a strap, machine bent using a forma or with a radio frequency machine, before being dried overnight in a kiln.

Material

Ercol furniture is made from high quality hard woods such as ash, elm, beech, oak and walnut which are sustainably sourced from around the world. Because it’s a natural material, every piece of wood will react to the steam bending process differently, which is why it is such a skilled craft.
