Too often when we talk about lighting, we only think about its practical functionality – ‘task lighting’ like table lamps or wall lights used to illuminate a reading corner, dining table or piece of art – and forget that a beautiful light can be a design statement in its own right. We asked Lucio Longoni to explain why, in our Houses and your home, more is more.

'Chandeliers are a great investment because they bring as much to a space when they’re switched off as when they’re lit up. Whether you choose a classic or mid-century style in Murano glass and burnished brass, their craftsmanship can be as much of a talking point as the intricate light patterns they create. These show-stopping pieces are unapologetically over the top and that’s why we love them.'

Maximum Impact

'Tiers of faceted glass beads exude laid back glamour. The inspiration behind our Antonella chandelier can be found adding impact to the round bar at Babington House, while Lexington brings some old Hollywood style to the bedrooms at Soho House Chicago.'

The Classics

'A traditional chandelier features warm, burnished brass and candlestick fittings and makes a space feel grand but somehow cosy at the same time. These pieces are equally at home in a country house like Babington House or a townhouse like Soho House 76 Dean Street.'

A Good Vintage

'If you’re a fan of art deco or Mid Century Modern, choose one of our vintage-inspired designs. You’ll see our Dawbarn chandelier in the bedrooms at White City House, while the Allis’ champagne-coloured globes illuminate its namesake restaurant on the ground floor of the House. Look for chandeliers with mouth-blown Murano glass shapes and brushed brass fittings in our American Houses - Palmetto (DTLA), Houston (Soho House Chicago), Juliana and Lena (DUMBO House, Brooklyn).'

The Outdoor Life

'Natural materials like rattan, rope, linen and wood, organic shapes and rough curves. Soft, pale, neutral, colours, natural palette, elements of nature. Traditional craft techniques like weaving. Bringing the outside in. Banbury in the walled garden bedrooms at Soho Farmhouse.'

'And if you don’t have room for a chandelier in your home, there are other ways to make a statement with lighting. Our Catalina and Artichoke table lamps are quirky talking points, while a favourite old base can be instantly transformed with the addition of one of our new Samarkand shades in vibrant vintage saree silk.'
