House Tip: Spring refresh with Soho House Design

Soho House Lead Designer, Harriet Liley, shares her tips for adding vibrancy and character to your space for the new season

Spring is finally here, and as you begin to shed your winter layers, it's a great opportunity to brighten up your interiors. 'In our Houses, we look to lighten the tones and textures of materials to suit the time of year,' says Harriet Liley, one of our in-house lead designers. 'In the warmer months, we add vibrancy through custom pattern work and freshen up window treatments with a coloured, sheer fabric, letting more light into the space,' she says. Below, take a look at Liley's tips for updating your space for the new season.

Modern shapes

'Spring brings connotations of new life and organic shapes, so look for sculptural pieces to add a contemporary touch to your existing space,' says Liley. 'At our Houses, we're loving the 1970s movement and all of its modern forms, as seen in the Vivienne sofa. When these shapes are blended with your existing furniture, they'll add vibrancy and an unexpected pop to your room.'

Light textiles

'Textiles are a great way to add some colour to any space. For spring, with more sunlight and warmer days on the horizon, I'd suggest looking to linens and lighter fabrics for upholstery,' Liley notes. 'Add bright patterned cushions or a bold colourful print to a chair or footstool to inject some new life into existing furniture.'

Oversized lamps

'Mood lighting is always important to create atmosphere, whatever the time of year. We love to play with oversized lamps. If you can't find the right size, you can add height and impact to your existing lamp bases with an oversized shade,' Liley suggests. 'Go bold with textured linen in a mustard yellow, or keep things simple with a neutral colour and a contrast trim. Look for interesting ceramic glazes, colours and textures for your bases to add character,' she says. Try a sculptural shape like the Amara floor lamp, or go for something bright such as the ceramic base of the Catalina table lamp.

Vintage-inspired accessories

'Accessories add the final layer to an interior and help to tie everything together. I love trawling through vintage markets and sourcing bright glassware and ceramics,' says Liley. 'The right vase can also act as a beautiful sculpture when placed in the right location. While we wait for the markets and shops to reopen, you can also find great vintage treasures online.'
